Drone Attacks on Kharkiv and Odessa Residential Buildings Result in Multiple Casualties
Nighttime drone strikes on Ukrainian cities cause damage to multi-story residential buildings and raise concerns over escalating conflict impacts.
On the night of June 1, drone attacks targeted residential buildings in the Ukrainian cities of Kharkiv and Odessa, resulting in injuries and property damage across multiple locations. Local authorities confirmed that both five-story and nine-story residential buildings were hit, with a total of seven people reported injured as a consequence of the strikes.
Sergey Lysak, head of Odessa's military administration, reported that a Russian drone struck a nine-story residential building in Odessa, partially destroying its first and second floors and igniting a fire. The facade and balconies of the building sustained damage. Additionally, fires broke out in one two-story non-residential building and two single-story structures within the city, collectively affecting four residents.
In Kharkiv, Oleg Synegubov, head of the Kharkiv regional military administration, noted that the drone attack resulted in damage to a five-story residential building, several multi-story buildings, garages, and nearby vehicles, with fires also reported. The mayor of Kharkiv, Igor Terekhov, confirmed that two further city districts sustained damage to at least three private houses. An additional drone strike was recorded in the town of Bohodukhiv, also located in Kharkiv Oblast. Authorities reported that three individuals sustained injuries, including a 34-year-old resident of Kharkiv and a 39-year-old resident of Bohodukhiv.

The Ukrainian Air Force reported that during the evening of May 30 and overnight into May 31, the Russian Armed Forces launched an extensive drone offensive, deploying 229 unmanned aerial vehicles. According to the Ukrainian forces, 14 strike drones successfully hit 11 locations, while wreckage from downed drones was found in 5 separate locations.
One of the strikes targeted an industrial facility in the Koryukivka district of Chernihiv Oblast, resulting in the death of a 58-year-old man and triggering a fire at a nearby parking lot that destroyed seven vehicles.
"These drone attacks on civilian infrastructure not only increase human suffering but also signal a strategic shift in the conflict, emphasizing a broader targeting of urban centers," said a defense analyst.
The escalation of drone use in Ukraine reflects a growing trend in modern warfare where unmanned systems are employed to inflict damage on both military and civilian targets.
