"The security situation in Germany and Europe has fundamentally changed over the past years, with daily encounters involving hybrid threats such as disinformation, cyberattacks, espionage, and sabotage," a Bundeswehr representative noted.

For example, two UAVs were spotted last week near a critical military base in Mechernich, North Rhine-Westphalia, prompting a police investigation. More alarmingly, on the night of August 5, a drone equipped with explosives collided with a Ukrainian cargo plane at Leipzig airport. Although the explosives failed to detonate, the incident triggered an investigation by Germany's Federal Prosecutor's Office, highlighting the potential for UAVs to be weaponized within or near critical infrastructure.

In response to these emerging security demands, German authorities are investing in specialized counter-drone technology and research. Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt announced the establishment of a new technology center at the German Aerospace Center's (DLR) test airfield in Saxony-Anhalt. This center will focus on the development, testing, and deployment of UAV countermeasures, aiming to enhance Germany's and Europe’s ability to detect, track, and neutralize unauthorized drone activity.
